Focus on The Good – Positive Journal Printable

When Aden was younger, I would pick him up after work and ask him about his day. He couldn’t stop telling me how much fun he had and all the activities he did. He loved school, loved his friends, teachers, everything!

I don’t know exactly when it happened, but I started to notice as he got older that he started to focus on the bad things that occurred. He would tell me about one small problem and then deem it a bad day/bad week/bad life. It was frustrating and disheartening to observe him being so negative. It wasn’t every day, but I knew as a parent I needed to teach him how to focus on the good before it became a bigger issue.

We tried talking. Asking questions. Attempting to guide him toward positivity. I think he got annoyed with me asking so many questions.

So… I decided to create a simple daily journal for him to reflect on the positive things that happened each day. Writing has always been easier for him anyway and it’s less of an annoyance. He doesn’t have to share it with me if he doesn’t want to, but usually he loves showing me afterwards.

Of course, I do understand that there will be days that aren’t so great and it’s ok to vent about it to us. However, I do want him to at least remember that you can find GOOD in every single day.

It’s a work in progress & a journal is not a fix-all tool. But I do believe it helps!

Even if your kiddo isn’t a negative Nancy, this printable journal can still be a useful daily reflection.

I think this is a great idea! I’m going to modify it for summer by changing “friend” to “sibling” to support our work with summer on sibling rivalry. And change “my favorite class” to another one about helping. Thanks for the ideas!

I love this activity, especially for mental health for all students including high school students and the constant struggles due to COVID. Thank you!!
